Bobby's Story:
Bobby Abner started crabbing at the age 11 off a pier in Randle Cliff, Calvert County, MD. He and his brother Tommy caught the crabs, a dozen or a bushel. Then their Mother would steam them and their Father would sell them in DC for $1 a dozen. During the summers of the early 1950's the money he and his brother made bought their school clothes. In 1957 Bobby went to work for Lloyd Travers catching crabs for $5 a day. In 1960 Bobby went to college at the University of Maryland where he played football. After college he came back to Calvert County and started a family. In 1963 he went to work for the government as a Surveyor. He started the crabbing business in 1964 and opened Abner's Crab House on Labor Day in 1966.    

At that time he owned 1 1/3 acre on Fishing Creek in Chesapeake Beach, MD. He later purchased the Marina while continuing to crab. Today he owns 10 acres on Fishing Creek Marina. The Crab House was remodeled in 1992, and more recently in 2008. He has worked with his sons and daughters throughout the years to build his crab house business. They have nearly 600 crabbing pots in the area waters. They not only supply the crab house with their own catch, but also other local watermen catch.
